If you're looking for a less mainstream movie going experience in the city of Charlotte, look no further than the Ballantyne Village Theater, located in the Ballantyne Village shopping area, at the corner of Ballantyne Commons Parkway and Johnston Road. From the outside, many people say the theater looks a bit like a spaceship, making it easy to spot. Inside, you'll find mostly independent and arthouse films being screened. Going to the theater is a welcome break from the commercial, blockbuster type movies (not that there's anything wrong with those....). With many great restaurants in the same shopping center, you could easliy make an evening out of it.
