Charlotte History and Statistics:
Charlotte is the largest city in North Carolina and the 18th largest in the United States. As of 2006, the popualtion of the Charlotte metroplitan area (MSA) was roughly 1.5 million. Charlotte has averaged 40,000 newcomers each year for the past 10 years, making the Queen City one of the fastest growing metroplitan regions in the country.
Nicknamed the Queen City, Charlotte was named in honor of Queen Charlotte, wife of King George III of England. Charlotte citizens opposed to British occupation during the American Revolution drove General Cornwallis from the area prompting him to call the city “a hornets nest of rebellion”.
Charlotte is the county seat of Mecklenburg County. A resident of Charlotte is referred to as a Charlottean.

In 1799, early settlers discovered gold near Charlotte making the town an overnight mining mecca resulting in the establishment of a U.S. Mint that operated for 25 years.
In 1903 more than half of the nation’s textile production was located within a 100 mile radius of Charlotte.
Charlotte headquartered banks operate in 29 countries including: Frankfurt, Hong Kong, London, Mexico City, Milan, Paris, Seoul, Singapore, Taipei and Tokyo.
The two largest banks in Charlotte have almost $43 billion in foreign deposits.
